Operation Lone Star Trial Defense Service

Defending Those Who Defend Our Texas Border

The OLS Trial Defense Service provides legal services to TMD service members who

are facing adverse administrative actions or criminal charges under the Texas Code of

Military Justice, at no cost to the service members. Legal assistance can be provided for the following:

• Legal consultations for adverse administrative actions

• Suspect rights consultations – including investigations, commanders inquiries, and other state military investigations.

You wil be in contact with a TDS Defense Counsel for thefollowing:

• Representation at administrative boards

• Section 15 consultations and other military justice matters including courts-martials • Appeal of adverse actions

Military Legal Assistance Operation Lone Star

As part of Operation Lone Star, the legal assistance team can assist with:

Powers of attorney

 A power of attorney allows an appointed person to legally act on your behalf, such as in legal or financial matters.

Wills

A last will and testament dictates your final wishes, to include the distribution of your assets, after death.

Landlord/Tenant/Employment Issues:

Help with housing and employment issues related to being called up for State Active Duty.

State Tuition Assistance (State TA)

• Successfully complete basic training 

Qualifying ranks: all enlisted ranks; Officers O1-O5; Warrant Officers WO1-WO3. 

• Must be enrolled in an academic program of instruction leading to a trade, vocational or 

academic certificate, undergraduate, graduate or professional degree from an accredited 

Texas technical school, college or university. 

State TA can be stacked with FTA and GI Bills provided the total does not exceed 100% of 

eligible tuition and fees. 

At the end of the semester 

• Send an electronic official transcript (PDF) to the State TA Office to verify passing grades.

Hazlewood Act/Hazlewood Legacy

• Serve 181 days of qualifying Active-Duty Service 

Designated Texas as Home of Record or entered the service in Texas or was a Texas resident. 

• Receive a DD 214 at the time of discharge 

education benefit of up to 150 hours of tuition exemption, including most fee charges, at 

public institutions of higher education in Texas. This does NOT include living expenses, books, or supply fees. The Hazlewood Act is only available for use at a Texas (state tax-supported) public college or university.

Federal Tuition Assistance Program (FTA)

• Currently serving in ARNG and possess a CAC 

Apply for FTA up to 60 days before the class start date, but no later than 8 days before the class starts. 

date (all FTA MUST be approved before the class starts). 

• You must submit an FTA request for each individual course that you want FTA to fund. 

• You must submit an education goal and approve it before using FTA. 

• You must complete the Virtual Benefits Training through AIED. 

• You must have an evaluated degree plan approved in AIED from https://www.armyignited.army.mil/student

• Serve 90 days of qualifying Active-Duty Service 

on/after Sept 11, 2001
